On September 11th, one man hopes to piss off Muslims enough so that they won’t bother Christians and the United States anymore. He’s obviously an idiot.
On the ninth anniversary of the September 11th attacks that killed thousands of Americans of all races and religions, Pastor Terry Jones from the Dove World Outreach Center in Florida is planning to host a “Burn a Quran Day”. Yes, that’s right, a good-old-fashioned Christian book burning.
Jones, autor of the book “Islam is of the Devil” and all-around “good christian”, is using the event to “urge American Christians to stand up” to what he describes as a “monolithic Muslim threat”. Apparently he’s not alone, as a Facebook event page already has thousands of “likes” and Jones said people have been mailing him Qurans to burn.
The planned event has caused the Sunnin University, Al-Azhar to condemn it as “stirring up hate and descrimination”. Right-wing American hatred towards Muslims has recently grown exponentially with the farsically-named “Ground Zero Mosque”, which is actually just a community center with an added space for prayer. Critics of the planned community center say that it’s a slap in the face to the thousands of Americans killed in the attacks and that the center would “breed terrorists”. Yes, watch out for those terrorists playing basketball and baking cookies!
With a swimming pool, a gym, a basketball court, a restaurant, a culinary school and other amenities that will be made available to all, it has been likened by many to a YMCA or Jewish community center.
Gen. David Petraeus, the head of American forces in Afghanistan, has repeatedly expressed the need for winning the “hearts and minds” of local people by treating them with dignity and respect. When Afghans see that their holy book is being burned, it will cause riots and attacks that will put U.S. troops further at risk. There will be similar riots and attacks in neighboring Pakistan and Iran. It will inflame the entire Muslim world and fuel acts of terrorism.
Duh. I’d be pissed too.
What’s most alarming about the burning of this holy book, isn’t the fact that it’ll piss a lot of people off, it’s the fact that it may not stop with just the burning of the holy book of the Muslims. This sort of hatred is a gateway drug that will possibly open the doors for more hatred.
